How can I move on from catching small fish about 1/2Ib to catching some 4-5Ib freshwater fish?

I have been fishing for just over a year now. I used to use a small starters rod, and I caught a 2Ib chub in a stream with it. Besides that I have only caught tiny fish at a local fishery (Timberlands). I know the majority of fish there are large, because that's what I see a lot of people cathcing. I have recently bought a new rod, 10ft feeder with quivertip. Any advice on new methods or techniques I can try, for larger freshwater fish from stillwater, then later on rivers and cs?
